We are Jim and Deb K., also known as the Trail-Nuts.
Our unquenchable sense of adventure and love of nature fuel our curiosity. We yearn for those far-flung places and to experience nature at its rawest—somewhere lost in a map's fold. It's out there where our senses are heightened and we feel most alive.
Trail Nut began as the name on a personalized license plate, but over the years it has become much more. It has become our philosophy.
What started with a Jeep and a desire to explore eventually led us to sell our house, buy a motorcoach, and travel this incredible country in search of new adventures. Along the way, we discovered something we never expected: home was never a place. Home was wherever the two of us happened to be.
We've learned that the destination is only part of the adventure. Some of our greatest memories came from the roads we almost didn't take, the people we met along the way, and the unexpected moments that reminded us why we started this journey in the first place.
Most of the stories you'll find here began with our Jeep, but Trail Nut has never really been about a single vehicle. It's about using capable vehicles to explore America's backcountry, discover remarkable places, and experience everything this country has to offer.
We created this website to document those adventures—mostly for ourselves, so that one day we can look back and remember the journey. But if you've somehow stumbled across our little corner of the internet, welcome. We hope our experiences inspire you to get outside, take the road less traveled, and create your own stories along the way.

Rockcrawlers and overlanders seem like they might be two completely different branches of the off-road enthusiast tree. One enjoys tackling difficult trail obstacles, and therefore builds a rig that has as much wheel travel and axle articulation as possible, with low gearing to creep over big rocks. The other seeks to travel dirt roads and off-road trails deep into the wilds, explores new places, and camps independently under the stars. These rigs are built for long-distance travel, with enhanced overnighting and livability upgrades.
