Clawhammer with Crawlur Offroad
|
We headed out to Johnson Valley with the guys from Crawlur Offroad to tackle Clawhammer. Though not nearly as difficult to traverse as some of the other Hammer Trails in Johnson Valley, it's a great trail nonetheless and offers up a barrage of moderately sized obstacles to put a smile on your face and keep you on your toes. We had such a great time wheeling Clawhammer. Can't wait to come back and run this trail again. Clawhammer is a relatively short trail and even though it's one of the easier trails in Johnson Valley, it has a rating of 4. Also, a big thanks to Stan and Chris of Crawlur Offroad in Indio, CA! |
Seven Mile Rim with Nikko & Lee
|
This trail really delivers on awesome scenery! Seven Mile Rim Trail is definitely not one of Moab's difficult trails, yet it is always a goodie! There are stunning views from the cliffs of the Mesa towards Canyonlands and beyond to the La Sals, huge Entrada Sandstone monoliths, Uranium Arch and several fun obstacles to traverse, including a hair-raising little obstacle called Wipeout Hill! Wipeout Hill can be bypassed, though years ago we tackled it in that same orange JKU Rubicon when she was stock. Lockers are definitely a good idea for the slow and steady climb up after descending Wipeout! We had some great company on the trail with us, Nikko and Lee, a wonderful couple documenting their traverse of the Trans-America Trail, aka. the TAT, from coast to coast in their Jeep JKU. We were lucky enough to run into them in Telluride, which led to an impromptu trip into Moab to run a few trails. For Nikko and Lee, Seven Mile Rim was a good introduction to Moab. Overlanding meets rock crawling! They took to it instantly and we really enjoyed wheeling with them!

Corral Canyon with the Indio Desert Rats
|
Bronco Peak to Sidewinder Corral Canyon has been on our list of must-do trails for awhile now. When we heard that the Desert Indio Rats were planning a run that included both Bronco Peak and Sidewinder, we jumped at the chance to join them on the trail and to check this one off our list.
We threaded our way up the connector trail to Bronco Peak as dark clouds drifted low and ominously overhead. Bronco Peak showed it's teeth early on, but all ten Jeeps made it up to it's peak unscathed. After a stop on the ridgetop for lunch, the sky began to clear. On the way down, there were a few more difficult obstacles to traverse before tackling Sidewinder. Packed with rock slabs and boulders, Sidewinder is also a fun trail and we quickly learned how it got its name. We had such a great time wheeling Bronco Peak and Sidewinder with the Indio Desert Rats in Corral Canyon! |
Cougar Buttes to Soggy Dry Lake
|
Located near the town of Lucerne Valley, California this area is part of Johnson Valley OHV. This was our first time out to Cougar Buttes and there are so many obstacles to choose from here. We had fun tackling a few of those obstacles, winding our way through the Buttes and then traversed on into the Mojave desert.
We ended up at Soggy Dry Lake where we opened up the throttle and had a blast rocketing across the hard flat lake bed! We had such a great time out there and can't wait to come back to this beautiful place to spend more time checking out some of the other obstacles in Cougar Buttes and exploring in the desert! |
Pinyon Mountain Trail and Sandstone Canyon
|
Located in San Diego County, California south of Scissors Crossing off of S2 in the Anza-Borrego Desert.
Pinyon Mountain Trail is awesome for it's incredible scenery. There are also two tricky obstacles along it's route for which it earns it's difficult rating. The trail consists of mostly easy sand washes with some moderately rock strewn sections, however the obstacles require high clearance, a trusty guide and a good line. If you go, be careful out there, take lots of water and have a full tank of gas! From the trailhead to Split Mountain Road where the pavement begins, including a side trek through Sandstone Canyon, we traveled over 30 miles in 6 hours. A great trail! With so much to explore out there, we will be back! |
Odessa Canyon Trail and Doran Loop
|
Located in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert near Barstow, California.
The trailhead for these trails lies just down the road from Calico Ghost Town and driven together as a loop takes about 4 hours to traverse. Beautiful scenery, rocks, narrow canyons and some ledges are part of the equation here and make this trail a must for the adventurous, but be forewarned, there is some pucker-factor here and high clearance and caution is recommended! |
